Thunder Over Louisville 2007

Each year one of the many festivities leading up to the Kentucky Derby is the Kentucky Derby Festival "Thunder Over Louisville". This all-day event features a spectacular air show over the Ohio River on Louisville's waterfront.

The air show is followed by one of the biggest annual fireworks shows in the United States.  If you are not familiar with Louisville, it is in northern Kentucky bordering Indiana. Downtown Louisville Kentucky and Jeffersonville Indiana are separated by the Ohio river but connected by several bridges.

During the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks show, the George Rogers Clark bridge becomes center stage. The bridge is closed and the Zambelli Fireworks people line the entire one mile length of the bridge with thousands of fireworks shells. But that is only part of the show.

Two huge barges are positioned in the river on either side of the bridge and they are also loaded with fireworks. The entire show is synchronized to a musical soundtrack played over hundreds of speakers lining the river banks.

This years show was greeted with picture-perfect weather weather of 75 degrees and clear blue skies. The river was very high, muddy and moving swiftly due to the heavy rain upriver of Kentucky.

Below are links to a selection of pictures that I shot during this year's extravaganza.  Enjoy.
