Clifty Falls State Park near Madison, Indiana

It was a gorgeous day so we hopped on the motorcycle and took a ride to Clifty Falls State Park about 50 miles from our home. I love riding the backroads of southern Indiana. We passed some incredible fields of wildflowers along the way. The par itself is really nice. Well marked trails lead through the hills and valleys along Clifty Creek and there are several waterfalls in the area. Unfortunately the creek was nearly dry and the waterfalls were a mere trickle on this weekend. Walking along some of the bluffs 100 feet above the stream bed makes me think it must be like being in the canopy of a rain forest as you are actually up in the tree tops.

The park has a number of wooden staircases to aid in traversing the very steep cliffs but it is still quite a workout to climb the hundreds of steps in some areas. The staircase leading to the biggest falls in the park, Big Clifty Falls, has been closed off after a number of people have fallen and been injured and even killed on the extremely steep and rugged terrain. You can still see Big Clifty Falls from an overlook but to get closer requires a long hike into the valley and walking up the stream bed.

How about a butter cup?

How about a few more?

Not enough?
